Cobot-guided 3D inspection of fabricated panels

Sheet metal fabrication

A ceiling-mounted six-axis cobot carries a 3D laser line profiler over each panel along a multi-pose scan path, measuring features that a fixed camera cannot see from one viewpoint. Conveyor infeed and outfeed, guarded cell with light curtain, and an inspection portal where operators see the verdict and quality sees the history.

The operator loads panel frames and enclosure boxes onto the centre conveyor; the cobot locates each part, scans it and measures it against nominal, and the part leaves on the OK conveyor to the left or the NG conveyor to the right. The live model below runs the same sequence — hold it, trip the light curtain, change the part or the reject rate, and watch the height map and measurements on the operator screen.

The table is glass, so one camera sits underneath and looks straight through it at the lower face while the top camera and dome light take the upper face. A servo spindle spins the ring at the second station for the periphery, with an endoscope entering on the bore axis. Accepted bearings leave on a belt; only rejects are pushed off.

Four-camera inline cell with a face flip

The ring slides between open jaws, gets clamped on its faces and turned 180°, so both faces are imaged by dedicated cameras rather than one camera and a mirror. Downstream, a lift raises the bore around a fixed borescope while the part spins, covering the periphery and the bore in the same move. Rejects are separated by defect family into their own lanes.

Vision-guided robotic furnace unloading

Rings leave the heat-treatment furnace in rows of four and settle on a buffer. A camera in a heat-shielded, purged enclosure images each ring in the pick zone and sends its centre coordinates to the robot, tied to the buffer’s encoder so the robot can follow a ring while it moves. The robot grips each ring in its bore and sets it into a crate, six by four, switching to the second crate when the first is full. Rings that land touching are flagged and run on to a bypass bin, so the robot is never sent to a position vision has not confirmed.
